Chief Minister, Dr. Pramod Sawant, has informed in the assembly that the State’s total public debt stood at Rs 15,512 crores as on June 30 this year.

Sawant provided this information while responding to a question tabled by Ponda MLA Ravi Naik.

Goa’s debt is clearly on a rise over the years, as is evident from the data shared by Sawant.

For example: the State’s debt increased by 14% from Rs 13,611 crore on March 31, 2018 to Rs 15,512 crores as on June 30 this year.

Prior to this, the State’s public debt had jumped by 9.8% from Rs 12,395 crore as on April 1, 2017 to Rs 13,611 crore on March 31, 2018. Meanwhile, market loans amounted to a lion’s share of the State’s overall public debt.

As on June 30 this year, Goa had outstanding market loans amounting to Rs 11,410 crore, which was 73.6% of overall public debt.

The second biggest contributor to public debt was National Small Saving Fund Loans, which amounted to Rs 2,297 crore as on June 30.

Central loans and loans from NABARD amounted to Rs 1,173 crore and Rs 574 crore respectively.

It was further revealed that the State Government borrowed Rs 353 crore for the Goa Water Supply and Sewerage Project between 2015-16 and 2018-19.
